Personal Statements
The personal statement is your opportunity to tell universities and colleges about your suitability for the course(s) that you hope to study. For many courses, applicants are not interviewed, so this may be your only chance to make the case for you to be offered a place.
The more competitive the course, the more likely it is that the personal statement will play a key role in the decision making. Many students, unused to this type of writing, use the web to find similar statements which they then use for inspiration. UCAS now puts all applications through similarity detection tests, which identify statements that have been copied from another source. A successful personal statement or statement of purpose will not only demonstrate your ability to write concise structured prose, it will also highlight your achievements and communicate why admission officers should be compelled to offer you a place. It will need to be unique and stand out from the crowd.
More and more students are turning to professional help with the initial ideas and the editing of personal statements. While you will need to write your own statement, it can be useful to have an experienced hand helping you to decide the content, and guiding you through the drafts with editing advice.
