11+ practice at home, marked as they go

The questions our tutors set, at home, marked the moment they are answered.

CHATT+ is our practice app, and it holds our own question bank: more than eight thousand 11+ questions, and over a thousand comprehension passages and question sets, across maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. They are the questions our tutors use in lessons, written in the GL Assessment style for the Ripon Grammar School entrance test. Every answer is marked the moment it is given, and where a question carries a written explanation it is shown with the mark, so a child working alone is not left guessing why they were wrong.

It works on a tablet, a phone or a computer, and can be added to a home screen so it opens like an app. There is nothing to install and nothing to download.

What a sitting looks like

Your child opens the app and chooses: a whole subject, a single topic, a timed paper, or the questions they have got wrong before. A topic set is ten questions and a subject or mixed set is twenty, so an ordinary evening is ten or fifteen minutes rather than an hour. The daily goal is ten questions, which is small enough to do on a school night — that is the point of it. There is nothing to print, nothing to set up, and nothing waiting on you to mark.

What is inside

Practise a whole subject, stay on a single topic, or build a pack of up to eighty questions and put a time limit on it. There are four timed papers, one for each subject: English and maths run to thirty minutes, verbal and non-verbal reasoning to twenty. Each is built to the shape of the real thing and drawn fresh from the bank every time, so sitting one twice is not sitting the same paper twice. Answers are recorded as your child goes, but nothing is marked until the clock stops.

Between sittings, the app remembers. Review brings back only the questions your child has got wrong and not yet got right, and a question leaves that pile as soon as they get it right, so the pile shrinks as they improve. Alongside it are a daily streak and medals at a hundred, five hundred, a thousand and on up to ten thousand questions answered — given for work done rather than for marks, because most of getting ready for the 11+ is turning up regularly.

A profile for each child

Progress, streaks and weak topics are kept separately for every child on the account, so brothers and sisters do not share a score. Each child is £9.99 a month, and you can add or remove places yourself from your account page, up to six children on one subscription.

You can see how it is going without standing over them: every sitting and its score, accuracy by subject, the topics they are weakest at, and how long they are taking per question — which matters as much as the marks in a timed exam.

What it costs

£9.99 a month for each child, and that is the whole of it. There is no free trial, no annual plan and no cut-down version: every child gets the whole bank and all four papers. Cancelling is done from your account, which opens the Stripe billing portal — no notice period, nothing to email and nobody to ring — and practice carries on until the end of the month you have paid for.

Questions parents ask

How much does it cost?+

£9.99 a month for each child on the account, so two children is £19.98 a month, on one subscription and one bill. There is no free trial and no annual plan. There is no contract either: cancel whenever you like and practice carries on until the end of the month you have paid for.

How do I stop paying?+

From your account. Manage subscription opens the Stripe billing portal, where cards, invoices and cancelling all live. There is no notice period, nothing to email and nobody to ring.

We have two children. Do we need two accounts?+

No. One account holds up to six children, each with their own profile, their own progress and their own pile of questions to go back over. You pay £9.99 a month for each place on the plan, and you can add or remove places yourself.

What happens when my child gets one wrong?+

It is marked there and then, and where the question carries a written explanation that is shown straight away. The question then goes into their review pile and comes back another day, and it only leaves that pile once they have answered it correctly.

What ages is it for?+

It is written for children preparing for the 11+, so most are in Years 4 and 5. The questions are the ones our tutors set for that exam, at the difficulty they are set at.

Which subjects does it cover?+

Maths, English, verbal reasoning and non-verbal reasoning. Each is split into topics your child can practise one at a time, and between them they cover the question types that come up in the exam, from letter codes and analogies to comprehension, spelling and grammar.

Does my child need a tablet, and is there an app to download?+

No to both. It runs in any modern browser on a tablet, phone or computer. On a tablet or phone you can add it to the home screen so it opens full screen with its own icon, which is how most families use it — but you will not find it by searching an app store, and there is nothing to install.

Will I be able to see how they are getting on?+

Yes. Every sitting is scored and kept, with accuracy by subject, the topics they find hardest, and how long they take per question — which matters as much as the marks in a timed exam.

Will it remind them to practise?+

No. The app does not send reminders or notifications, so keeping it going is down to you and your child. A short sitting most evenings does more than a long one at the weekend.

What if a question looks wrong?+

Every question has a report button. Your child taps it, picks a reason and can add a note, and it comes straight to the tutors. The question is marked as normal and practice carries on.

How does signing in work?+

There is no password. You give your email address and we send a six-digit code; on a device that offers it, you can set up a passkey instead.

Do I need to be a tuition client?+

No. The app is open to anyone, whether or not your child has lessons with us. If they do, their tutor can point them at the topics to work on between sessions.

Still deciding, or want to talk it through with someone first? Get in touch and we will answer honestly about whether it is the right thing for your child.

If you have already decided, sign up at chattplus.app and your child can be practising this evening.
